Zohran Mamdani's ascent to the Democratic nomination for the mayoral race in New York City has establishment Democrats in a tizzy. They can't stand the fact that a candidate from their party who is not beholden to Wall Street could become the mayor of America's financial center. And in that reaction to Mamdani, the Democrats have shown once again who they serve - wealthy donors - and who they do not serve - everyone else.
Think the Democrats are going to save us from Trump and fascism? From AI taking everyone's jobs? From your neighbors getting deported? From other governments committing genocide or starting stupid wars? Think again. They are in so deep with Wall Street and private equity that they are barely discernible from Republicans on economic policy. They are in so deep with AIPAC that they have become complicit in Israel's murderous campaign in Gaza.
For Democrats, it's easy to talk big when you aren't in power, and in my opinion, the Dems prefer not to be in power. It enables them to fundraise on the awful policies of Republicans. But as soon as Dems do obtain power, their game plan amounts to half measures and token gestures meant to placate voters while remaining in service to their corporate donors. That's not a formula for an effective opposition party. It's a formula that ensures that the powerful elite in this country have nothing to fear from the two major political parties. Both parties are bought and paid for.
The only real opposition to Trump and the Republicans is the small and vocal progressive wing of the Democratic party. And that part of the party is constantly under attack from the rest of the Democratic party because it threatens the pipeline of cash that the establishment has been living off of for years. That cash ensures that no establishment Democrat will ever exhibit the moral courage to oppose the elite and powerful in the US. The only time you will see the Democrats effectively leap into action is when they feel threatened by a progressive or democratic socialist candidate like Zohran Mamdani. God forbid Mamdani might actually help people in NYC.
